VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, April 8

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Kaitlyn Barba, Birmingham Charter: Barba was stellar in the pitching circle last week in three wins for the Patriots. The freshman hit her spots and let her defense anchor Birmingham in shutout wins over Chatsworth and Providence, and she allowed just four hits in a 2-1 win over Granada Hills.

Joie Economides, South Hills: The sophomore belted three home runs, including a grand slam, in a 16-1 win over Diamond Bar. She finished the game with nine RBIs. In the La Mirada tournament, she had three hits and three RBIs in a 4-1 win over California and had two hits and an RBI in a 9-0 win over Bishop Amat. She is batting .471 with six homers and 28 RBIs this season.

Ryann Orange, Torrance: Orange threw a pair of complete games to lead Torrance to Pioneer League wins over North 5-2 and West 2-0. She allowed one hit, one earned run and struck out three against North, and she pitched a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts against West.

Kylee Magee, Canyon: The Arizona State-bound Magee earned pitcher of the tournament honors in the Michelle Carew Classic by posting 67 strikeouts and a 1.53 ERA while leading the Comanches to the first championship in the tournament since 2001. She is 18-3 overall with 0.79 ERA and 242 strikeouts in 114 innings this season.

Josie Scales, King: Scales captured the girls triple jump title at the Trabuco Hills Invitational and Distance Carnival with a winning mark of 40 feet, 2 inches, which is the top distance in the state this season under all conditions. There were no wind gauges for the jumping events. She edged out teammate Alyssa Hope (39-11, No. 2 in the state) and topped her personal best by 10 inches. Scales also placed second in the long jump (19-0), finishing behind Hope’s winning mark of 19-5 1/2. Hope and Scales rank No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, in the state in the long jump.

Taylor Johnson, Long Beach Poly: Johnson won the 200 meters in 24.95 seconds at the Trabuco Hills Invitational on Saturday. The sophomore sprinter also helped Poly win the 4×100 relay in 47.43 and she finished fourth in the 100 in 12.30. Her overall performance earned her sprinter of the meet.
