VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week, April 8

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Miles Ortiz, Granada Hills Charter: Ortiz was instrumental in the Highlanders’ two-game sweep of Cleveland last week. He went 1 for 2 with two walks and a key double in the Highlanders’ 4-1 win. In the second game, he hit a home run in an 8-1 victory. Granada Hills was in first place in the West Valley League heading into this week’s two-game series against Birmingham.

Kerry Smith, Covina: Smith became the state leader in the 400 meters and won the 200 meters in the Covina Invitational. Smith won the 200 in 21.44 seconds and had the fastest time in the state this year (47.33 seconds) while winning the 400. He was also part of Covina’s winning 1,600-meter relay team. Smith is expected to compete in the 400 and relays at this week’s Arcadia Invitational.

Brady Ebel, Etiwanda: Ebel, a third baseman and pitcher, has made a significant impact during his freshman season. Last week, he hit a two-run home run to lift the Eagles to a 3-2 victory in the series opener against Damien. Ebel capped the week by tossing a four-hitter with eight strikeouts in just his second start on the mound. He also went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead a 3-1 win in the final game of the series. Earlier this season, the son of Dodgers third-base coach Dino Ebel threw a no-hitter against Ramona in his first start on the mound.

Corey Nunez, Torrance: Nunez helped the Tartars win all three of their games last week. He went 6 for 9 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. On the mound, he pitched three scoreless inning and allowed two hits.

Gannon De La Cruz, Millikan: De La Cruz went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a single, a walk, 2 RBIs and one run scored in a big 8-1 win in a rivalry game against Long Beach Poly. The senior second baseman bats third for the Rams and has helped his team remain undefeated in Moore League play this season. In 16 games, De La Cruz is batting .396 with 14 RBIs.

Austin Overn, Foothill: Overn, the center fielder for the Knights baseball team, went 2 for 4 and had a triple in the bottom of the seventh inning that drove in the tying run and he scored the winning run in a 2-1 win over El Dorado. Three days later, at the Trabuco Invitational track meet, Overn set personal bests in the 100 meters and long jump. His time of 10.49 seconds in the 100 is second-best in Orange County this season, behind Servite’s Max Thomas, who won the Trabuco Invitational in 10.40 seconds. Overn won the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 1 inch, the second-best mark in the county this season. Overn has a baseball scholarship to USC.
