OC District Attorney candidates on building confidence in the justice system

“What will you do to build public confidence in Orange County’s justice system?” That’s what our editorial board asked of the candidates for Orange County district attorney. Here are their responses.

Todd Spitzer: “I will continue to implement common sense reforms to fix the mess left by my predecessor and to make our criminal justice system more fair, transparent, and accountable. These reforms do not have to come at the expense of public safety. Importantly, I will also continue to actually prosecute crime, hold criminals accountable, and stand up for victims. I have led the charge for reforms that work to reduce recidivism and hold persons accountable while offering programs and services that will reduce crime and allow formerly charged persons opportunities to be successful and productive members of our society. “

Pete Hardin: “I’ll enhance transparency through an unprecedented effort to disclose prosecutorial data. I’ll meet with the community, victims, and law enforcement alike with regularity, and I’ll be available to the media. When there are mistakes I will own them instead of covering them up. I will also develop a team of prosecutors that will work to respond to specific neighborhood concerns, making our office more accessible than it has ever been.”

Michael Jacobs: “Emphasize to every attorney and employee that professionalism, competency, and ethics must be the standard applied to all casework, situations, and work product of the District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office should be managed as an upper echelon law firm with the highest legal standards demanded and expected from each member.”
