Standoff with armed robberies suspect at Santa Ana school has campus on lockdown

Part of an elementary school in Santa Ana was evacuated as police negotiated with an armed robbery suspect on the campus’s driveway Tuesday, March 8.

The man parked in a vehicle surrounded by officers at Lowell Elementary School is a suspect in several robberies that took place earlier that day, Santa Ana Police Commander Julian Rodriguez said. Police spotted him on the road at about 8 a.m.

A brief pursuit ensued. It ended on the west driveway of the campus at 700 S. Flower Street, Rodriguez said.

Footage posted to Twitter and recorded from inside a vehicle facing the standoff in the driveway showed police with rifles running toward an SUV that was stopped in front of a closed gate. Other officers were seen leaning against the door of the vehicle.

“Just keep your head down, OK?” the person recording the video says to others inside the car with him as helicopters are heard buzzing overhead.

A SWAT team was summoned and the buildings closest to the suspect were evacuated, Rodriguez said. The remainder of the campus as well as nearby Pio Pico Elementary were placed on lockdown.

It wasn’t clear if the man was armed at the time of the standoff.

This is a developing story.
