The 93rd Academy Awards presented a historic win for “Nomadland” director Chloé Zhao. She won best director and received the award following a presentation by 2020’s winner, Bong Joon-ho.
Zhao is the first woman of Asian descent and the second woman overall to win best director. The movie is also nominated for six awards, including best picture and best actress.
In her speech, she discussed the importance of seeing the good in people, which caused people on social media to reflect.
“This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves. And to hold on to the goodness in each other. No matter how difficult it is to do that,” said Zhao.
Social media quickly reacted to Zhao’s win and her speech. These were some of the reactions:
Chloé Zhao just quoted 三字經, the “Three Character Classic,” in accepting the #Oscars for Best Director (first woman of color to win!!):

This intro of the nominees for Best Director where Bong Joon-ho asked each to submit a 20-sec answer to the question “What does it mean to be a director?” Followed by Chloé Zhao’s win for Nomadland, capped off w/her beautiful speech—*that’s* what the #Oscars should be. Beautiful.

I really loved Chloé Zhao’s speech. I admittedly get consumed by the darkness in other people. A reminder about the goodness is welcome. #Oscars
