Chloé Zhao won best director for “Nomadland” at the Academy Awards on Sunday, and in doing so became the first woman of color — and only the second woman ever — to win the top directing honors.

Zhao had been considered a frontrunner throughout awards season for her moving portrayal of the nomad culture, men and women who for a variety of reasons live life on the road in vans or RVs.

Her star, Frances McDormand, was nominated for best actress for the film, and watched as Zhao spoke of her lifelong belief in the goodness of people.

As a child growing up in China, Zhao recounted how she and her father used to play a game in which they memorized classic Chinese poems and texts, and then recited them to each other.

As the Academy Awards approached, she said she found herself thinking often of one in which the first phrase went, “People at birth are inherently good.”

“I have always found goodness in the people I met everywhere I went in  the world,” said Zhao, who follows Kathryn Bigelow, director of “The Hurt Locker,” as the second woman to win the award. “So this is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold onto the goodness in themselves, and to hold on to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that.

“This is for you. You inspire me to keep going.”
