Investigators suspect a Laguna Niguel man was intoxicated when his truck fatally struck a 71-year-old San Bernardino woman in Riverside who was tending to an injured dog in the roadway on Saturday, April 17.

The victim was attempting to care for a small dog in the street that had been hit by another vehicle, when a red 2003 Ford Ranger slammed into her on the 4600 block of Mission Inn Avenue at about 7:53 p.m., Riverside police said in a news release.

The pickup’s driver continued east without stopping, but was followed by another motorist who witnessed the crash, RPD Officer Ryan Railsback said.

The witness called police, and officers managed to track down the truck with the aid of a helicopter, Railsback said. Its driver, 22-year-old Mason Rodney Howard of Laguna Niguel, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center early Sunday morning, where he was held over the weekend in lieu of $1 million bail.

The identity of the woman who died was withheld pending the notification of her relatives, Railsback said. Further information regarding the collision and the events leading up to it were not immediately available.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the crash that might be relevant to investigators to contact Riverside Police Detective G. Anderson at 951-826-8723, or ganders@riversideca.gov.
