BREA — Scoring points in the North Hills League wasn’t a problem for Brea Olinda’s football team this season. Nor was stopping the other team from scoring.

With the league title on the line against El Dorado on Friday, the Wildcats once again played a complete game and came away with a 27-0 victory.

Brea Olinda finished the short season 3-2 overall and 3-0 in league, outscoring its three opponents by a combined score of 93-26.

The Golden Hawks finish second in league at 2-3 and 2-1.

“We always talk about one game at a time,” Wildcats coach Robb Perrance sai, “getting better each week and keep working on the things that you can control and they did it. … They believed in the system and things we tried to do.”

Junior quarterback Justus Thongprahchanh, who is always a threat to run, contributed in three of the Wildcats’ four touchdowns.

Thongprahchanh had touchdown runs of 6 and 16 yards and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Emmit Gossman in the fourth quarter that essentially put the game away for the Wildcats.

Thongprahchanh set up his 6-yard touchdown run with a 32-yard pass to Noah Vonburger on the previous play.

In the first quarter, Vonburger ran for a 23-yard touchdown that gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

Brea Olinda’s defense also played a huge role in the victory.

The Golden Hawks were forced to punt four times, were stopped on fourth down four times and committed three turnovers.

The Wildcats had a 13-0 second-quarter lead when the Golden Hawks put together their best drive of the game to that point and were on the verge of making it a one-score game.

But on a third-and-5 from the 6, defensive tackle Elijah White made a touchdown-saving tackle on quarterback Blake Thomas 2 yards from the end zone.

The Hawks faced a fourth-and-1 on the next play when Dain Larsen and Cole Shaffer stopped running back Jackson Smith for no gain.

Grossman and Ryan Reagins both had interceptions in the end zone for Brea Olinda and Reagins came up with another interception inside the Wildcats’ 5-yard line.

The Golden Hawks committed eight personal fouls.

Capping the season with a league title was extra meaningful considering the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, Perrance said.

“It’s tough on kids,” the coach said. “I’m really proud of them. We pulled it all together when we needed to.”
