Kadin Semonza has career-best effort as Mission Viejo rolls over San Juan Hills

MISSION VIEJO — Mission Viejo’s sophomore quarterback Kadin Semonza had the best game of his young career in a 49-14 rout of San Juan Hills on Friday in a South Coast League game at Mission Viejo High.

Semonza completed 20 of 23 passes for a career-high 329 yards and five touchdowns.

Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson credits Semonza’s preparation for his success Friday.

“He struggled in the first half last week because his preparation wasn’t there. He forgot what got him the success in the first place,” Johnson said of Semonza. “His preparation was back to what it was before that and he was dialed in tonight. They (San Juan Hills) gave us come coverages we hadn’t seen on film and he answered the call and did a nice job.”

Three of Semonza’s touchdown passes were to sophomore Mikey Matthews, who caught seven passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns.

San Juan Hills (2-2, 0-2) came out strong and competed for the majority of the first half. The Stallions went on a 17-play, 77-yard scoring drive capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Hudson Jones to Cole Monach to give the Stallions a 7-0 lead.

Mission Viejo (4-0, 2-0) took over the game near the end of the first half. The Diablos scored 21 unanswered points in two minutes and nine seconds of game time.

Kenny Manassero ran for a 2-yard touchdown to put Mission Viejo ahead 14-7 with just over two minutes left in the second quarter. He rushed for 96 yards on 12 carries with a pair of touchdowns.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Diablos drove down the field with a scoring drive capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass from Semonza to Matthews to increase the lead to 14.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ruben Lopez forced a fumble that was recovered by Charles Frum to give the Diablos the ball at the San Juan Hills 25-yard line. After a short penalty, Semonza connected with Matthews again for a 30-yard touchdown to give Mission Viejo a 28-7 lead at halftime.

Semonza threw touchdown passes in the second half to Jackson Holman, Joshua Welles and Matthews.

The Diablos’ defensive front was dominant as well, collecting eight sacks. Northern Arizona signee Micah Carreon had three of the eight sacks.

“That was a concern because we lost our three top pass rushers from last year. We wondered who was going to step up and it’s been Micah,” Johnson said. “He has been a beast for us. And some other guys that nobody has heard of have worked hard and are doing well.”

Owen Ricketts had two sacks and Tommy Reese, Caden Herr and Aidan Cady each had one.

Jones completed 20 of 33 passes for 173 yards and threw two touchdowns for San Juan Hills. Monach had 47 yards and two touchdown receiving. Braden Pegan caught seven passes for 55 yards.

Mission Viejo will play its rival San Clemente next week for the South Coast League championship. San Clemente beat the Diablos the last time the Diablos traveled to San Clemente, but Mission Viejo won convincingly against the Tritons last season.

“They are a great program and do a great job over there,” Johnson said. “We all know it’s a tough place to play. We have to have a great week of practice and go down there and take care of business.”
