ANAHEIM – Marina took its act on the road and secured an important 21-6 victory over Katella in a Big 4 League game Thursday night at Glover Stadium.
Vikings quarterback Jack Miller threw touchdown passes to Dane Brenton, Gavin Del Toro and Wyatt McClour in the penultimate game of the season. The last touchdown held the Knights at bay, giving Marina (4-1, 2-0) a comfortable two-score cushion in the fourth quarter.
Vikings coach Jeff Turley was proud of the grit displayed against a tough Katella (2-2, 0-2) team, especially on defense.
“It took us a little bit to get it going but the defense did a great job again tonight, they really stepped it up.” Turley said.
Midway through the fourth, with Marina up 14-6, Miller found McClour on a fourth-and-goal pass from the 10 that sealed the win.
Next up is a potential “winner takes all” league showdown with Segerstrom in the final week of the season.
“Hey, it’s like every year it (league title) seems to come down against those guys,” Turley said. “It’s gonna be another tough one, this time we gotta go to their house.”
On the opening possession Marina forced a three-and-out punctuated by a Darren Vasquez sack.
Three plays later, Miller saw Brenton all alone near the right sideline without a defender within 10 yards of him. Brenton raced up the field for a 67-yard touchdown catch.
“We all saw it, and we’re screaming. We were just hoping Jack (Miller) was gonna see it,” Turley said of the opening touchdown. “He scanned over and saw the guys on this side (of the field) alone.”
The Vikings’ no-huddle offense took advantage of a young and inexperienced Katella team that was playing under newly appointed interim coach Juan Viramontes.
“It just shows the inconsistency that we had because of our situation, with having young players and the coaching staff coming together to right the ship,” Viramontes said. “We played a good team in Marina and they took advantage of those opportunities that we gave them.”
The Knights came up empty in three of their four red zone trips, turning the ball over on downs twice and missing a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter.
“We just missed a couple of opportunities on offense but the upside for Katella football is looking very good,” Viramontes said.
Donovan Arrington picked off Miller and Katella drove to the Vikings 8. They elected to go for it on fourth-and 1 and came up empty on their first trip to the red zone.
Late in the second quarter, Brenton’s interception helped Marina double its lead before halftime.
After the interception Miller found McClour for a 28-yard connection that set up a 9-yard toss to Del Toro with 10 seconds left in the half.
An interception by Ledell Stark with 48 seconds remaining in the third set up Katella’s only touchdown, which came on the first play of the fourth, a 7-yard keeper by Donovan Arrington to make it 14-6.
