Orange sends message with 73 points in rout of Millikan

ORANGE – The Orange High football team started Thursday night’s game against Millikan of Long Beach   motivated to deliver a message, and that’s exactly what happened.

The Panthers (4-0) scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back in a 73-20 rout at El Modena High’s Fred Kelly Stadium.

Orange coach Robert Pedroza said his players felt disrespected by Millikan heading into the game. When the Millikan team took the field before the contest, its players ran across the Orange sidelines in front of the senior night ceremony.

“They (Millikan) had said some things in the newspaper about our team and our kids were excited to get after it and show them what we are about,” Pedroza said. “All facets, the special teams was on point, the defense played great and the offense did their thing. It was a great team victory.”

Panthers quarterback Daylen Pedroza, no relation to his head coach, ran for 81 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed six passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Isaiah Adetoye rushed for 127 yards on eight carries with a touchdown and freshman Kobe Boykin had 60 yards on four carries with a touchdown.

“We knew they were going to play a lot of man coverage which would open the door for the running game,” coach Pedroza said. “We took what the defense gave us.”

Raymond Casillas returned two punts for touchdowns of 42 and 52 yards, respectively. Issac Adetoye and Justin Harris each returned interceptions for touchdowns.

The Panthers scored on their opening drive on just three plays. Pedroza ran for an 18-yard touchdown and converted a two-point attempt to give Orange an 8-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

On the ensuing possession, Pedroza threw a 43-yard pass on a wheel route to Issac Adetoye. The Panthers converted another two-point attempt to extend the lead to 16-0.

After the Panthers defense forced a three-and-out, Casillas returned a punt 42 yards for a touchdown to put Orange ahead 22-0.

Harris intercepted a Millikan pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 30-0 with over five minutes to go in the first quarter.

Pedroza rushed for two more touchdowns in the second quarter to give Orange a 44-6 lead entering halftime.

Millikan (2-2) struggled to move the ball throughout the game. Quarterback Peter Kim was constantly under pressure and was sacked six times. Blaize McKinnins, Joe Aguilera and Blaze Iglesias each had multiple sacks.

Kim threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Pellum and a 46-yard touchdown pass to Jhae Drummer.

Pellum, a freshman, was targeted over 15 times and had six receptions for 55 yards. He ran for an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Orange-Millikan contest was agreed to earlier in the week after both teams had an opening because the teams they were supposed to play didn’t have enough healthy players.
