Zimmerman, Irvine trip up Laguna Hills with all-around strong play

LAGUNA HILLS – Kade Zimmerman found a lot of ways to leave his mark on Irvine’s 39-14 victory over Laguna Hills in a nonelague game Friday night.

Zimmerman caught six passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns, but there was so much more to his night. He also recovered a fumble, intercepted a pass and had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown for the Vaqueros (2-0).

Irvine quarterback Beck Moss noted afterward that Zimmerman, his friend since childhood, and many others on the team are trying to make the most of every moment in this shortened season.

“It’s a miracle season for us,” Moss said. “We’ve known each other since we were four years old. We grew up on the same street playing backyard football. God brought us together and he’s allowing us to do what we do. I appreciate that so much.”

Laguna Hills (1-1) got on the scoreboard first thanks to a 23-yard touchdown pass from Hayden McKenna to Troy Liegber, but it was all Irvine after that.

Irvine outscored the Hawks 24-7 in the second half.

Vaqueros coach Tom Ricci prepared his team during the week with a warning that Laguna Hills could be Irvine’s toughest opponent this season.

“We kept coming in and saying this is going to be one of the best teams we’re going to face,” Ricci said. “They’re going to be our biggest test. Our guys worked hard all week with that in mind.

“I told them tonight it wasn’t just Zimmerman or Moss. Our offense was clicking and our defense was great. Our defense clamped together and ran a great scheme. We scored on special teams. We were a complete team tonight.”

In addition the two touchdown passes he threw to Zimmerman, for 39 and 42 yards, Moss also threw a 17-yard TD pass to Corey Beck.

Moss completed 16 of 26 for 242 yards with three touchdowns, and Beck caught five passes for 61 yards and a score. Cameron Goods led all rushers with 46 yards on nine carries and a touchdown for the Vaqueros.

McKenna finished 9 of 16 for 123 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. Liegber rushed for 36 yards on 10 carries, caught four passes for 36 yards with a score and had eight tackles.

Laguna Hills host Dana Hills in a Pacific Hills League game on Friday, April 2. Irvine hosts Woodbridge on the same night in its Pacific Valley League opener.

“We have to do the same thing we have been doing,” Zimmerman said. “Preparing with no mercy. We’re not going to slow down this season.”
