THE GAME: Trevor Bauer gave up three home runs in a five-run fifth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Dodgers, 7-3, on Monday night at Peoria Sports Complex.
PITCHING REPORT: Bauer retired the first 11 Mariners batters in order – then just two of the next eight before he was pulled from the game. Bauer gave up just a single while striking out five through the first four innings. In the fifth, however, he gave up back-to-back doubles (Luis Torrens and Dylan Moore) then back-to-back home runs (Evan White and Jose Marmolejos). Two batters later, he gave up a solo home run to Mitch Haniger to end his night. Bauer has given up five home runs in his past eight innings of Cactus League play. … Right-hander Josiah Gray walked the bases loaded to start the seventh inning and gave up a two-run double to Kyle Seager before his pitch count got high and he was pulled from the game.
BAUER TALK: This was Bauer’s response when he was asked about his trouble in the fifth inning. “I got exactly what I wanted out of tonight. I was really good the first couple innings. I was sharp, landing curveballs for strikes, slider was good – really good – was cutting the ball pretty well. So I got what I wanted out of it. The fifth inning, like I said, I was throwing pitches. There really wasn’t any thought of sequencing or whatever. I was just throwing pitches. That’s not a really good mind frame to be in when you’re trying to get guys out. But I was just finishing off the night, trying to get my pitch count up.”
HITTING REPORT: Chris Taylor was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run, his fourth homer of the spring. Taylor is batting .419 (13 for 31) in Cactus League play. … Justin Turner was on base three times, going 2 for 2 with a single, a double and a walk. … Max Muncy was 2 for 3, raising his spring average to .242 after a slow start.
