Colt Fulton threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns as No. 4-ranked Santa Margarita soared to a 54-16 victory over Lakewood in Anthony Rouzier’s first game as the Eagles’ coach.
Fulton threw the touchdown passes to five different receivers – Michael Buckley, Ian Grogan, Jalen Jones, Nicholas Lopez and Reymello Murphy.
Murphy had four receptions for 139 receiving yards. Hussein Santillan had two rushing touchdowns for the Eagles who play powerhouse St. John Bosco on Friday, March 19 at Santa Ana Stadium.
No. 6 Corona del Mar 38, Palos Verdes 21: The Sea Kings, 16-0 last season, got this season off to a strong start as sophomore quarterback David Razor threw three touchdown passes in their season opener at Costa Mesa High.
Tommy Griffin had two touchdown receptions and Ryan Zimmerman had the other. Jason Vicencio rushed for two touchdowns for CdM, which plays at No. 9 Los Alamitos on Friday, March 19.
Crean Lutheran 10, Sonora 9: Connor Grace’s 33-yard field goal was the difference for the host Saints (1-0) as Rick Curtis made his debut as the Saints’ coach.
Senior running back David Huff scored Crean’s touchdown. Grace averaged 50 yards a punt. Senior defensive lineman Caeden Chase had three tackles for losses for the Saints.
“Our defense played really well,” Curtis said, “and our kicking game was great, too.”
Garden Grove 17, Costa Mesa 6: Vany Rodriguez threw a touchdown pass to Jason Bruce and Malachi Bey ran for a touchdown for the host Argonauts (1-0).
Bey finished with 24 carries for 197 yards. Czalin Lobaugh had 11 tackles and one interception on defense, plus five catches for 48 yards. Jason Bruce had six tackles.
“We turned the ball over a couple of times, lost a couple of fumbles,” Garden Grove coach Ricardo Cepeda said. “Give credit to Costa Mesa. They played really hard, played with a purpose.”
Rancho Alamitos 28, Westminster 7: Seymore Brown scored one touchdown rushing and one touchdown receiving for the visiting Vaqueros (1-0).
Oye Akerele also ran for a touchdown and had an interception as did Stephan Monge for the Vaqueros. Jeremy Lopez caught a touchdown pass.
Rancho Alamitos coach Mike Enright praised the team’s defense, led by linebackers Kyle Culbert and Frank Nguyen. Most of all, though, Enright was happy the players got the chance to play.
“This is my 21st year as head coach here,” Enright said. “We’ve won league championships, played in CIF finals But last night was one of the better nights, just to see the happiness on the kids faces that they were able to play again.”
