Santa Margarita girls water polo edges Orange Lutheran in sudden-death overtime

Ella Schneider scored on a penalty shot drawn by Honnie Vandeweghe early in sudden-death overtime Thursday, March 11 to lift Santa Margarita High’s girls water polo team past visiting Orange Lutheran 10-9 in the Trinity League.

The USC-committed Vandeweghe helped cap a physical match by drawing the penalty against the Lancers’ goalie.

Schneider, a junior, paced the Eagles (3-0, 2-0) with five goals. Vandeweghe scored once and added two assists and three steals.

Santa Margarita goalie Izzy Rosensitto finished with eight saves.

The scored was tied 7-7 after regulation. Santa Margarita’s Camille Mras, Carly McMurray and Natasha Kieckhafer each scored in overtime.

Orange Lutheran, which beat host Mater Dei in overtime on Tuesday, led 5-3 going into the fourth period. Santa Margarita takes on Mater Dei on Tuesday.
