They say it takes about 21 days to establish a new habit. But my recent research suggests four days in a row is enough to get hooked on eating cookies for breakfast. Now I’m starting to wonder if there’s anything wrong with that. These cookies keep calling my name.
The cookies are from Paderia, a Fountain Valley-based bakery that recently opened a second location in Irvine. I went to that new branch recently to buy a box of Portuguese doughnuts called malasadas, but when I got there I learned that the malasadas are exclusive to Paderia’s Fountain Valley flagship. This outpost makes banana pudding and bakes cookies and ensaimadas. The latter are Filipino brioche buns topped with icing and aged white cheddar. I came home with all of the above, but it was the cookies that I couldn’t put down.

If I had to play favorites, I’d say the peanut butter chocolate version is the one I’ll be eating most days. This one is dark, almost black, from it’s chocolatey, brownie-like dough, which is studded with a combination of chocolate and peanut butter chips. My second choice would be either the sea-salt chocolate or the chocolate walnut (which also includes pecans). Each cookie weighs almost as much as a cup of coffee. Some are three fingers high. These are not small cookies.
