Laguna Woods Village’s most vulnerable residents, those 75 or older, will be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the end of Friday, March 12, Village Management Services CEO Jeff Parker announced during a regular meeting of the United Mutual board on Tuesday, March 9.
An estimated 8,000 residents have received both doses of the Moderna vaccine, Parker said.
“One more day of our second dose and we will be concluding second-dose applications,” Parker said.
He said staff will evaluate whether it’s possible to set up a one-day vaccination clinic using the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Village residents 65 or older who are interested in receiving a vaccine can join a waiting list by contacting info@lagunawoodsvillage.com.
Parker directed eligible residents in search of vaccinations to alternate options if they have yet to be contacted by VMS or MemorialCare volunteers.
Appointments at vaccine distribution sites at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, Disneyland and the Anaheim Convention Center can be made through the county at Othena.com. To check for appointment availability at other locations or to check eligibility for a COVID-19 vaccine, residents can use MyTurn.ca.gov, a state resource.
Vaccines also have been allocated to some pharmacies; check chains’ websites for more information.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Orange County qualified across all three critical metrics for red tier status, a less restrictive tier of the state’s coronavirus tracking system that governs which businesses and public spaces can reopen.
The county has to show it meets the metrics for a second week before it can move into the red tier, which is widely expected to happen Wednesday, March 17. That would allow restaurants, gyms and movie theaters to open for indoor business with capacity restrictions.
Two key metrics had previously reached the threshold for the red tier, even advancing beyond to the “moderate” orange tier: testing positivity (the number of swabs and spit tests that return positive for the coronavirus) and the health equity metric (the test positivity of disproportionately impacted neighborhoods). But the third required metric, the county’s new case rate, lagged behind until this week.
The case rate in Orange County has dropped to 6 per 100,000 residents, according to a state update Tuesday, March 9, falling below the rate required to meet the red tier requirements, 7 per 100,000.
The county has to maintain that improvement for at least three weeks in the red tier, while also showing it can meet the lower thresholds of the orange tier for two weeks, before it could continue with even more reopening of its business and public sectors. That could happen by early April if positive trends in curbing the virus continue.
Within the city of Laguna Woods, the count totals 403 virus cases and 39 deaths.
Variance moratorium
The board passed a resolution that would place a six-month moratorium on variance requests.
This is to relieve the manor alterations department as VMS trains new staff and to better manage the applications still being processed, a staff report said.
Variances are required when any structural changes are being made to a building, President Sue Margolis explained.
Director and architectural control and standards committee chair Brian Gilmore moved the “drop dead date” for the moratorium to begin to Friday, April 9, allowing extra notice for residents, real-estate professionals and staff.
“We hope it takes less time” than the six months allotted, Margolis said. “But it’s until we get caught up.”
The board approved the resolution 7-1-2 upon second reading, with one director opposing and two abstaining. The resolution takes effect April 9.
Resale report
The average resale price for a co-op in United Mutual in February was $263,331, up from $236,119 in February 2020, according to a VMS staff report. Resales year-to-date numbered 61, up from 50 the same time last year. Sales volume in February was $6.8 million compared with $6.4 million in February 2020.
