Coronavirus: Orange County reports 281 new cases and 12 new deaths on Feb. 27

The expectation of high winds again is closing the county’s mass vaccination site at Disneyland on Sunday, Feb. 28, officials announced.

Those with appointments scheduled for the outdoor operation that uses several large tents will be switched to the indoor Anaheim Convention Center site, but still will receive their dose on the scheduled day, officials said. The sites are currently focused on giving people their second doses.

As of Friday, the California Department of Health’s vaccination dashboard reported 696,994 vaccinations have been administered in Orange County.

On Saturday, the OC Health Care Agency reported 281 new cases of the virus, making for 246,264 cases since tracking began.

Noting ongoing issues with the state’s database that might be slowing reports of new deaths, county officials reported 12 additional deaths on Saturday. Orange County has had 3,904 people die of the virus, according to county records.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process.

Saturday’s update by county officials said 444 people are currently hospitalized by the virus; with 128 of them in  intensive care units.

This week Orange County surpassed 3 million tests administered for the virus, adding 16,684 in just the last day of reporting. Currently about five of every 100 tests are returning positive.

After recent winter weather in other parts of the country delayed operations in Orange County, the three large mass vaccination sites are all functioning again – except for a wind closure on Thursday and now Sunday. The other sites are at the Anaheim Convention Center at 800 W. Katella Ave. in Anaheim and Soka University in Aliso Viejo.

A smaller vaccination site that had been opened at Santa Ana College to serve nearby communities hit hardest by the pandemic remained closed over the weekend with no information on when it might reopen.

Officials have said that once supplies are confirmed for vaccinating people working in the education, child care and food and agriculture sectors, scheduling of appointments will begin. Officials recently announced it was expected that a third of new allocations of supplies will go toward those groups.
