Pickup driver arrested after rollover crash injuring 2 in Costa Mesa

A violent, rollover crash in Costa Mesa early Sunday morning left two people in a hospital and a Maywood man arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, police said.

The crash occurred immediately after a pickup truck ran a red light at Newport and Harbor boulevards at around 2:07 a.m., Costa Mesa police said in a statement.

The truck was headed south and hit a pedestrian who had been walking along Harbor Boulevard. The truck then slammed into another vehicle before rolling over.

It wasn’t clear if the pedestrian was crossing the street or on a sidewalk when they were hit.

The pedestrian and the driver of the other vehicle were both taken to hospitals, where they were still recovering. Their conditions weren’t known as of later on Sunday morning.

The driver of the pickup was not injured, police said. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of a felony. Police haven’t said whether they tested the driver for drugs or alcohol.

Both Harbor and Newport were closed for hours after the crash but were reopened at around 10 a.m.
