Azusa Pacific University back open after threat prompted temporary evacuations

AZUSA — Azusa Pacific University and its regional campuses were evacuated Wednesday because of threatening messages that included a bomb threat, authorities said.

By 10:35 p.m., evacuation orders were lifted. The university announced “There is no longer a threat to the community. Business may resume as normal.”

The announcement applied to two campuses in Azusa and to regional campuses including in Los Angeles, Monrovia, Murrieta, San Diego, Orange County, the high desert and the Inland Empire.

The university, a private Christian school in the Los Angeles suburb of Azusa, earlier announced shortly after 5:30 p.m. that students should evacuate, stay away from campus or shelter in place if they lived in on-campus housing.

Azusa police said campus safety officials had received an e-mail that said explosives had been placed on campus but didn’t specify which campus.

Campus searches were begun but no explosives had been found by late Wednesday night.
