Expect to see military aircraft training over Southern California

Expect to see military aircraft over the skies of Southern California in the next weeks as Marine Corp and Navy crews train together.

The second phase of Winter Fury-21, a large-scale, joint force exercise began Tuesday, Feb. 16, with members of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing taking to the skies. The training, which will last at least a week and a half, ensures the Marines are prepared and equipped for future maritime conflicts occurring in remote locations far from military bases, officials said.

The exercises’ first phase began on Jan. 19, and used Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and the surrounding Channel Islands. Training missions included scenarios simulating long-range strikes where infantry Marines transported military equipment and vehicles and helped with logistics.

Capt. Sarah Shoemaker, an exercise planner, said the training will help develop tactics and procedures used during real-life combat situations.

The second phase involves aircraft in the Marine’s arsenal, including the new age F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, AH-1Z Vipers, UH-1Y Venoms, F/A-18 Hornets, CH-53E Super Stallions, MV-22B Ospreys and KC-130J Hercules aircraft.

It is expected people on the ground will see the military aircraft training over land in Southern California. There will also be visible troop movements and military equipment transport.

Marines will do both day and night operations in which they will fly to small, makeshift refueling and rearming locations. The exercise falls in line with a new focus on training for a quicker and leaner Marine Corps that can move and engage enemies, even in out of the way places.
