The Museum of Latin American Art’s first 3D virtual exhibition celebrates women

The pieces in the Museum of Latin American Art’s new “Herland: Women Artists from the MOLAA Collection” exhibit cover topics such as race, social injustice and female empowerment. And it’s coming to viewers at home in 3D.

The exhibit, which launched earlier this month and will run for nearly a year, is the first in the Long Beach museum’s virtual 3D galleries. It is made up of 56 pieces hat include paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings by 44 female artists.

“Today this concept is more important than ever before,” Gabriela Urtiaga, chief curator at the Museum of Latin American Art, said in Spanish.

While the works vary in styles, there is a common thread.

“They are artists with different aesthetics yet they all have a common denominator, and that’s struggle, the fight to break stereotypes and extend the limits of female creativity,” she said.

And thanks to 3D technology that makes it look as if the viewer is walking through the gallery with the ability to zoom in on individual pieces and click on an icon to read text panels, it will almost seem as if the artwork can be touched.

“This is the first fully virtual showing that MOLAA has undertaken,” Urtiaga said. “But we have plans to present ‘Herland’ in our galleries once we can reopen our doors because virtual can never replace the physical.”

The exhibition also marks an important milestone for the museum because as the venue marks its 25th anniversary, “Herland” is the first step to expand the museum’s focus on female artists by acquiring more artwork from Latina artists for its collection and programming more exhibits focusing on Latinas, Urtiaga said.

Already in the works is an exhibition of artwork by Judy Baca, a Chicana artist and activist, which will take over most of the museum with more than 100 pieces of her work on display. It’s scheduled for this summer if the museum is allowed to reopen.
