An MIT student is being sought for questioning in the shooting death of a Yale student, said the police in New Haven, Conn.
The police on Thursday released a photo of Qinxuan Pan, 29, identified as a resident of Malden, Mass., and a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Police said they had evidence Pan was “in the vicinity” when Yale student Kevin Jiang, 26, was fatally shot Saturday evening on the street in a New Haven neighborhood near the campus. The location was near the residence of Jiang’s fiancee — a woman Pan knew from her time at MIT.
Because Jiang was found next to his car, which had new body damage, there had been initial speculation that the killing was the result of a road rage incident.
Pan’s home in the Boston suburbs is about a 2½-hour drive from New Haven. He was seen on Saturday night at a Best Western motel in North Haven, 8 miles from the shooting site.
The U.S. Marshals Service reported on Thursday that Pan had been seen more recently in Georgia and that he has friends or relatives in the Atlanta area. The police said he should be considered “armed and dangerous.”
He is not officially a suspect in the shooting, and the warrants for his arrest concern stolen vehicles, the police said.
At a press conference Thursday, Police Chief Otoniel Reyes said he would not comment on whether Pan’s acquaintance with Jiang’s fiancee, Zion Perry, was considered a factor in the murder.
According to the Yale News, Perry received her bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from MIT last year and crossed paths “multiple times” with Pan, including at a party where they were photographed together in March 2020. Perry is now a graduate student at Yale.
She and Jiang had known each other for a year and became engaged the week before his death.
Pan received his bachelor’s degree from MIT in 2013 and was continuing there as a doctoral student and a researcher at its computer science laboratory, the Yale paper said.
