Taking off glasses to drive takes more than eye surgery

Q. Is it necessary to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles that one no longer requires a vision restriction?  My daughter has had laser eye surgery and believes that she must notify the DMV that she no longer requires corrective lenses. This to avoid getting ticketed for such if she were ever to get pulled over and not have on glasses or contacts. If so, how do you notify the DMV as it doesn’t seem to be taking appointments?

– Teal Spivey, Gardena

A. This is a fairly common question to Honk, Teal, and yes, it would be a good idea to get the restriction removed from her driver’s license.

Here’s how:

She should go to her vision-care specialist’s office and have an optometrist or an ophthalmologist fill out a Report of Vision Examination, also called a DL 62. Google it to get a copy. That will document the surgery and the current level of vision.

Take it to a DMV field office to get that restriction removed. Yes, the DMV’s offices are open, although new appointments can’t be made now, so she would need to just show up.

Until then, “the customer should carry the DL 62 form … as proof that they are in the process of removing the restriction from their driver’s license if questioned by law enforcement,” Nicholas Filipas, a DMV spokesman in Sacramento, told Honk in an email.

“It would be up to law enforcement whether that documentation would be sufficient to avoid a corrective-lens violation,” he said.

Honk doesn’t wear a badge, but he can’t imagine a cop would have a problem with that proof.

Q. What a shock I had when I tried to take the on-ramp at Fairview Road to go south on the I-405! It was closed down. There is a ton of construction in that area, but did workers remove the on-ramp permanently?

– Linda Ruiz, Anaheim Hills

A. Your timing, Linda, is better than a Swiss watch.

As of 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, that ramp was to be open again.

“It was closed for 12 days to allow crews to shift the ramp to align it with the first half of the new Fairview Road bridge,” said Megan Abba, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Transportation Authority, which is overseeing the widening and other improvements to the I-405 between the 73 and I-605 freeways.

That half of the new bridge was scheduled to open a half-hour later.

During this massive project, which includes some bridges getting torn down and rebuilt, the transportation agency tries to avoid closing ramps at the same time for consecutive streets along the freeway, Abba said, but sometimes must do so.

Honkin’ fact: United Airlines along with partner Mesa Airlines intends to purchase up to 200 electric aircraft that would shuttle people to large airports, such as Los Angles International Airport, where the passengers could then jump jets. United offered up Hollywood as one place customers might jump aboard. Powered by batteries, the air taxis would have at least a 60-mile range and be capable of reaching speeds of up to 150 mph or even more, United said this week. The aircraft would be able to take off and land vertically and are to be in place within five years.
